Mata Ruda's mural “Protectress” in Kiev, Ukraine.
“Protectress” This is my most recent wall in Kiev, Ukraine. It is a healing representation of Berehynia, a female spirit in Slavic mythology, which recently came to be regarded as a “Slavic goddess” with a function of “hearth mother, protectress of the home in late 20th century Ukrainian romantic nationalism centered on matriarchal myth. The female representing Berehynia is an immigrant woman from Azerbaijan. Surrounding her physically and spiritually are sunflowers, the national flower, in a Ukranian traditional floral woven scarf. The wall is located in a very powerful site, Independence square, where the 2014 Ukranian Revolution took place.
